The purpose of the Conference is to provide an informal setting for frank and open discussion on critical issues related to disarmament and security. With the overarching theme of “Creating a Peaceful and Safe Future: Pressing Issues and Potential Solutions”, the Conference addressed a number of important issues, including: humanitarian dimensions of nuclear weapons, nuclear-weapon-free zones, current situation and challenges to the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, nuclear safety and security, small arms and light weapons control, the role of civil society in promoting disarmament, and disarmament and non-proliferation education.Representatives of states, local governments, the United Nations and other inter-governmental organisations, academic institutions, NGOs and other civil society organisations, the media, high school and university students attended the 2013 Conference. Conference participants also enjoyed a number of events and outings organised by the host city of Shizuoka, including a spectacular fireworks display to mark the opening of the Conference, an exhibition featuring displays by civil society organisations advocating on issues of peace and disarmament, and several post-Conference excursions.
